ADS van STIGT AND KATSA DELIVER SERIES OF GEARBOXES FOR ELECTRIC PROPULSION
About two years ago, we got in contact with ship design company Conoship, who were looking for gearboxes for use in seagoing vessels with electric propulsion.
Based on that, we contacted our Finnish partner Katsa. Tomi Dewes, Vice President Gearbox business at Katsa, says: ’Since the start of our cooperation, working with ADS van STIGT has been beneficial for both parties. They are an experienced and solid team, often finding good projects for us. And this project is yet another good example. As we were not experts in main propulsion gearboxes when they approached us with this request, we were a bit skeptical at first. But based on our previous experiences with ADS van STIGT, we were confident we could pull it off together.’
The 2L550 units that the Katsa engineers developed in cooperation with the team at ADS van STIGT are specifically designed for ships with electric propulsion using low-torque, high-speed electric motors, making an excellent combination with diesel-electric drive lines. This makes that ship designers, ship builders and ship owners now have the choice to select a standard (and often even smaller sized and lighter) electric motor. In addition, the twin input/single output gearbox design by nature allows for the propulsion system to be redundant. With its integrated lubrication system a long, reliable service life is ensured.
As a result of our joint efforts, ADS van STIGT and Katsa won the order from Holland Shipyards Group to supply five of these gearboxes for the ships designed by Conoship.
Of course, the gearboxes have passed all applicable class tests without any problems, successfully followed by full load testing on an external test bench. Recently we delivered the first unit to Instalho Scheepsbouw, part of Holland Shipyards Group, and they are installed by the shipyard in mv ‘Saffier’ for De Bock Maritiem BV. The second gearbox will follow shortly and is destined for Hartel Shipping & Chartering BV’s ‘Maasvliet’ vessel. Numbers three, four and five are also destined for ships of these shipowners.
As a tandem with Katsa we are proud that we recently received the repeat order from Instalho to supply two more gearboxes of the same type. One of these units is destined for a new ship also ordered by Hartel.
All in all, this is a good example of how ADS van STIGT as a dealer initiates new developments and works closely with Katsa to support the energy transition in shipping with solid, future-oriented gearbox solutions.
